“TERROR AND REFUGEES.”

Here is a new essay by Paul Merkley. We present this essay reprinted by permission of Paul and from The Bayview Review. See the links at the end for direct access to the rest of Paul’s work.

The Humanitarian Response to the Muslim Swarm.

Millions are fleeing the Middle East today because it has became, for the most part, an ugly cockpit of poverty, disease and death. These millions are fleeing into our world — which, we quickly acknowledge, also has much ugliness about it. Our daily discourse ranges from crude cynicism to vigorous blasphemy, with a swath of outright pornography in the middle. Our popular culture – most clearly reflected in the content of our entertainment media — boxes the compass from idiotic to depraved, with never a glimmer of decency along the way. Yet no thinking person among us would trade our world for theirs; and, more important for the moment, while millions of people born in the Arab world are fleeing their world in order to live in ours no one has fled from ours to theirs in recent memory.

SUNNY WAYS: THE TRUDEAU LEGACY IN FOREIGN POLICY.

In a bit of a catch-up here is a new essay by Paul Merkley. We present this essay reprinted by permission of Paul and from The Bayview Review. See the links at the end for direct access to the rest of Paul’s work.

After we have seen a few months of Mr. Trudeau’s foreign policy in action we will be in position to judge to what extent it really does diverge from the policy in effect over the last nine years or so – as everyone seems to assume that it will. However, no grown-up person imagines that by then our foreign policy will really have evolved into the “sunny ways” that Mr. Trudeau remembers as characterizing the policies of his father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau (Prime Minister 1967-1979, 1980-1984.)

HAS ISRAEL REALLY LOST HER BEST FRIEND?

In a bit of a catch-up here is a new essay by Paul Merkley. We present this essay reprinted by permission of Paul and from The Bayview Review. See the links at the end for direct access to the rest of Paul’s work.

It would be fruitless to deny the universal editorial judgment that, with the electoral defeat of Stephen Harper and his Conservatives in Canada, Israel has “lost its best friend.” (e.g., Guardian, October 20.) Equally it is difficult, if not impossible for the time being, to see any “silver lining” for Christian friends of Israel in this new reality.

After we have seen a few months of Mr. Trudeau’s foreign policy in action we will be in position to judge to what extent it will diverge from the policy in effect over the last nine years or so. However, no grown-up person imagines that by then our foreign policy will really have returned to the “sunny ways” that Justin Trudeau says characterized the policies of his father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau.

WE ARE ALL CRUSADERS. WE ARE ALL JEWS.

In a bit of a catch-up here is a new essay by Paul Merkley. We present this essay reprinted by permission of Paul and from The Bayview Review. See the links at the end for direct access to the rest of Paul’s work.

The key to the mystery of the Muslims’ unappeasable contempt for the Jews is in Muhammad’s teaching that it was the Jews who initially were responsible for the failure of his whole neighborhood to give up everything they had previously believed and to adopt his teaching, holus bolus, then and there.

This circumstance, according to the Qur’an, proves that the Jews are irretrievable liars, deceivers, incapable of belief. In Sura 5: 41-43 we read: “The Jews [are] men who will listen to any lie. . . . [I]t is not God’s will to purify their hearts.  For them there is disgrace in this world, and in the hereafter a heavy punishment. . . . For they are not (really) people of Faith.” This indictment stands today at the heart of the Muslim-Jewish relationship.

A corollary to this teaching is that, to the extent that the world still abstains from embracing Muhammad’s teaching this is ultimately attributable to the perverse resistance of the Jews.

HOW MANY SWALLOWS MAKE A SPRING?

Here is a new essay by Paul Merkley. We present this essay reprinted by permission of Paul and from The Bayview Review. See the links at the end for direct access to the rest of Paul’s work.

The day after the dust began to settle on Israel’s War of Independence, congenital optimists – there were many more of that breed alive then than there are today! –  began scouring the landscape for signs of Spring – signs that Israel’s enemies had accepted the futility of defying the edict of the United Nations – that they and would,  in reasonable time, give up on their determination to drive the Jews back into the sea and accept opportunities for constructive diplomacy. The informed insiders were sure that they could already see signs that the people and the leaders of Israel, together with the leaders of the Arab nations, were quietly preparing to enter into a new era of goodwill. Surely these are swallows, everyone said! Surely Spring cannot be far behind!

And so we must tread cautiously. Still, there have been so many signs of late that Israel’s strategic situation as well it standing in world public opinion is improving.  It is legitimate, I believe, for realists to take note of some almost entirely unanticipated  developments on the world scene over recent months, that, taken together, seem  to suggest a dramatic improvement in Israel’s political assets, her security situation and her prestige.

Socialism: The Collectivist Aspect

We encountered the idea of collectivism in this article: The Tools Collectivists Use To Gain Power. In it, Brandon Smith of Alt-Market.com, discusses the collectivist position versus the individualist position. The collectivist approach to politics and society forms the core of socialism which is the political expression of collectivist ideology. We won’t say more at this time but wanted to capture this insightful idea.
