Dietary Supplements

This topic is part of a series of health-related topics with a focus on anti-aging. Most of the source material comes from a weekly eletter from the economist Patrick Cox who has an investment advisory service for the biotechnology field with Mauldin Economics. Material from other sources has also been included.

Nitrates

Patrick Cox in Future Shock, Medical Foods, and Aging lists beet juice and other dietary nitrate-rich foods as a supplement that helps older people who use beet juice and exercise have younger, healthier brains.

  • lower blood pressure
  • increase blood flow to the brain
  • increase athletic performance

Coffee

Patrick Cox outlines the benefits of coffee: Coffee, California, and Weaponized Food Phobias. Benefits include:

  • lower rates of Alzheimer’s, liver disease, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and others.
  • Epidemiologically, it’s more than obvious that coffee is geroprotective, an anti-aging therapeutic.

Cox describes coffee as the most effective geroprotector available to the average consumer other than vitamin D3.

Vitamin D

Tech investment advisor, Patrick Cox[b] gives a brief history of vitamin D and the current state of research. The pioneer in Vitamisn D research is Dr. Michael F. Holick[a] whose work is covered in his new book The Vitamin D Solution.

Summarizing Cox, the body manufactures vitamin D from sunlight, but most people come no where close to the optimum level. Concerns about excessive exposure to sunlight as a source of harmful skin cancer are discussed. Melanoma, the deadly skin cancer, is not related to sunshine. Non-melanoma skin cancers do increase somewhat with sun exposure, especially with sunburns. These skin cancers, however, are relatively benign, as they don’t tend to spread to other parts of the body.

I’m adding a series of videos covering a single presentation broken into separate half hour segments. It covers a number of vitamins other than D such as C and K as well as lysine. Here is the first:

Benefits

Most people in the northern hemisphere, by raising blood  serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] to an optimal value, can cut their risks from most major diseases by 50 to 80 percent. Diseases and conditions positively affected by adequate D include:

  • hypertension,
  • bone density,
  • cardiovascular disease,
  • stroke,
  • type 1 diabetes,
  • type 2 diabetes (to a lesser extent),
  • rheumatoid arthritis,
  • peripheral vascular disease,
  • multiple sclerosis,
  • dementia,
  • autoimmune diseases, and
  • viral diseases such as H1N1 and AIDS.

The optimal value is a serum D level of about 40 ng/ml, but even more if you are obese. It takes about 100 international units (IU) to raise serum blood levels by 1 ng/ml in a healthy adult. The active form of vitamin D is 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3.

Many of the benefits of D appear rapidly. Holick and others who prescribe D in clinical situations report that patients often experience dramatic improvements in quality of life within months. Depression, irritable bowel syndrome, and various other maladies can respond extremely quickly to the sunshine vitamin.

Cannabis Drugs

Patrick Cox talks about cannabidiol  (CBD): Cannabis Drug Companies May Profit from Opioid Crisis. Uses include pain relief, traumatic brain injury, and suppression of seizure, among others.

Here’s a short article on medical marijuana: Medical Marijuana Is a Major Threat… to the Status Quo. Cox says: We see ongoing and planned clinical trials for the use of cannabinoids for conditions like Alzheimer’s, cancer, COPD, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, Tourette syndrome, and more.
