The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc Ontario

The municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc, located in Southwestern Ontario, is the 75th largest city in Ontario from 2011 census data. It is located 40 kilometres west of London, Ontario. The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc was formed in 2001 from an amalgamation of the Town of Strathroy and the Township of Caradoc.

According to Statistics Canada, some demographic characteristics of Strathroy are:

  • Population: 20,978 in 2011. The population growth rate of 5.1% is below the 2006 – 2011 provincial average of 5.7%.
  • Labour and wages: n/a.
  • Language used: English 95.2%; other 4.8%.
  • Education: n/a.
  • Citizenship and immigration: 2.4% aboriginal and 1.8% visible minorities. It should be noted that the immigrant population is 12.1%. The largest visible minority groups living in Strathroy-Caradoc were South Asian, Black and Latin American.

Climate and Soil

Strathroy is in plant hardiness zone either 6a (see interactive map) or 6b (hardiness index 65) (see Plant Hardiness Zone by Municipality, interactive list). A large scale map of the zones is shown in Figure 2.

The table Strathroy Average Monthly Climate Data & Extremes, has values for many climate parameters (taken from Ontario, Canada Climate Stats). Selections are:

  • Annual rainfall: 76.4 cm.
  • Annual snowfall: 181.6 cm.
  • Annual precipitation: 94.5 cm.

Union Gas provides gas services within the municipality (see: Union Gas Service Area). Head office is in Chatham with district offices in Windsor, Chatham, London, Sarnia, Waterloo, and Brantford in Southwestern Ontario.

The contact for setting up an account the Customer Contact Centre at 1-888-774-3111. A deposit for a new account is required unless a letter of reference is provided by your previous (to new) electricity or gas supplier.


The Town of Strathroy purchases its treated drinking water from the Lake Huron and Elgin Area Primary Water Supply Systems (LHEWSS). Transmission is via a pipeline with a capacity of 54,700 m3/day. The current average day flow for Strathroy in 2010 was 4,795 m3/day. It receives all its treated water from Lake Huron.

LHEWSS chlorinates water before distribution (read: Water Treatment and Distribution in London). Neither agency uses chloramines  (chlorine plus ammonia) (read: Water Quality).

Water and sewer are billed on a flat rate of 11 m3. Inntegrus handles the water as well as the electricity services. A deposit for a new account is required unless pre-authorized billing and payment is set up in which case the deposit is waved.
