The Town of Tillsonburg Ontario

The town of Tillsonburg, located in Southwestern Ontario, is the 87th largest city/town in Ontario, by the 2011 census data.

According to City Data, some demographic characteristics of Tillsonburg are:

  • Population: 15,301 in 2011. The population growth rate of 3.2% is below the 2006 – 2011 provincial average of 5.7%.
  • Labour and wages: the participation and employment rates are slightly below provincial averages while the unemployment rate is higher.
  • Language used: English 99%; other 1%.
  • Education: above the provincial averages in all categories except university.
  • Citizenship and immigration: 0.7% aboriginal and 4.0% visible minorities with Southeast Asia dominant at 54% followed by 26% Black.

Climate and Soil

Tillsonburg is in plant hardiness zone either 6a (see interactive map) or 6b (hardiness index 65) (see Plant Hardiness Zone by Municipality, interactive list). A large scale map of the zones is shown in Figure 2.

  • Annual rainfall: 88.2 cm.
  • Annual snowfall: 127.6 cm.
  • Annual precipitation: 101.0 cm.

Tillsonburg Hydro Inc., (THI), (519-842-9200) is 100% owned by the Town of Tillsonburg and operates as a regulated company under the auspices of the Ontario Energy Board. THI serves more than 6,500 customers covering 22 square kilometres in the Town of Tillsonburg.


Union Gas provides gas services within the municipality (service area locator). Head office is in Chatham with district offices in Windsor, Chatham, London, Sarnia, Waterloo, and Brantford in Southwestern Ontario.


Oxford County owns and operates 19 drinking water systems (contact).

The Tillsonburg Water System is a Large Municipal Water system as defined by Regulation 170/03 and serves a population of approximately 16,340. The system consists of ten well sources, seven of which are classified as GUDI (Groundwater Under Direct Influence of Surface Water) and three are secure groundwater wells.

The County of Oxford, Public Works implements and maintains a Drinking Water Quality Management System as outlined by the Ontario Ministry of Environment.
