Sam Collins – March, 2016

The month below:

  • 20160330 The S&P 500 closed above its bearish resistance line
    • The focus this week will be on the stock market’s reaction to a plethora of economic reports.
    • Trade: CMA (short) Comerica Incorporated broke below a bull channel support line on higher-than-average volume
      • CMA stock is a short sale candidate at $38 with a downside target of $32
      • Close 38.01
  • 20160329 The failure of the Dow Jones Transportation Average to hold above support is not a good sign
    • The focus this week will be on the stock market’s reaction to a plethora of economic reports.

      • a quick short sale at $50 with a downside target of $42.
      • Close 50.84
  • 20160328 Nasdaq Tests Important Support. The index reversed from it Thursday, but a close below it would be a point for the bears
    • The 4,714 level in the Nasdaq is an important support line. If it fails to hold, the next significant support is at the 50-day moving average at 4,577 and rising.
    • Trade: SWFT (long) Buy Swift Transportation Co on a pullback to its 50-day moving average
      • Buy SWFT stock at $16.50 for a trade to $20
      • Close 18.27
  • 20160324 Market Running Out of Gas, But… Anything can happen when the major moving averages come under attack
    • Trade: ADI (long) Analog Devices, Inc. is having difficulty holding above its 200-day moving average
      • Traders should sell ADI stock short at $58 with a downside target of $50 for a potential return of almost 14%. A stop-loss order should be entered at $60.
      • Close 58.33
  • 20160323 A consolidation is due and, in fact, may have already started
    • Trade: NEM (long) NEM Stock Topping Out. Buying volume in Newmont Mining Corp is lagging and MACD issued a sell signal
      • For those who are, sell NEM stock short at $28 with a downside target of $24
      • Close 27.30
  • 20160322 A mild correction is likely to follow the five-week, 13%-plus advance
    • The target is the support zone at 2,020 to 1,990, with the 200-day moving average at 2,017.64 a bare minimum target.
    • Trade: XLNX (long) A recent buy signal and takeover potential make Xilinx, Inc. a buy candidate
      • My proprietary internal indicator, the Collins-Bollinger Reversal (CBR) has proved accurate with XLNX stock, correctly signaling both buys and sells. It triggered a sell signal at the December high, and on Jan. 15, it flashed a buy signal at about $40. Another CBR buy signal was triggered on March 7 at $46.
      • My initial upside target for XLNX stock is $50
      • Close 47.49
  • 20160321 Stocks Due for at Least a Modest Correction
    • Trade: SKX (long) NBL Stock Could Blow Past Targets. Higher oil prices are likely to have analysts raising their price objectives for Noble Energy, Inc.
      • Buy SKX stock on a break of $34 with a trading target of $40
      • Close 32.94
  • 20160318 As strong as the index may currently appear, it will probably not break to a new high
    • I’m certainly not clairvoyant, but experience tells me that it takes big buyers to move markets to new highs. I see little evidence to support a breakout from the current level.
    • Trade: NBL (long) NBL Stock Could Blow Past Targets. Higher oil prices are likely to have analysts raising their price objectives for Noble Energy, Inc.
      • Buy NBL stock at $34 with an initial trading target of $39 to $40
      • Close 34.06
  • 20160317 The central bank once again succeeded in making the one move that would boost stocks
    • Trade: WCG (short) WellCare Health Plans, Inc. is presenting an opportunity for short sellers
      • Sell WCG stock short at $90 with a downside price target of $75
      • Close 90.71
  • 20160316 A double-top in MDY just below major resistance is enough to make me pause
    • Trade: HBAN (long) Huntington Bancshares Incorporated broke above the resistance line of a bullish channel
      • Traders who purchase shares at $9.50 could see capital gains of more than 15%
      • Close 9.66
  • 20160315 Don’t Anticipate a Breakout This Year. We’re finally seeing some positive signals, but the market’s internal energy is almost used up
    • Trade: SSYS (long) Quick Drop in RRC Stock Could Land Shorts 22%. Speculative Range Resources Corp. looks headed for another sell-off
      • Traders should buy SSYS stock at $25 with a trading target of $30
      • Close 25.16
  • 20160314 The market is showing strength, but traders should remain cautious
    • I am cautious, and decisions must wait on stocks’ reactions to this week’s economic reports.
    • Trade: APC (long) APC Stock is a Buy for the Short and Long Term
      • APC stock appears to be a good candidate for a trade from $47 to $58
      • Close 46.29
  • 20160311 Buying in gold signals apprehension about the global economic outlook
    • Trade: RRC (short) Quick Drop in RRC Stock Could Land Shorts 22%. Speculative Range Resources Corp. looks headed for another sell-off
      • Sell RRC stock short at $32 with a downside target of $25. So be sure to enter a stop-loss order at $34.
      • Close 30.03
  • 20160310 After moving through light resistance, the Dow indices are up against more significant overhead
    • I have stated before that the target for this year is no progress.
    • Trade: IP (long) International Paper Co broke up through its long-term bearish resistance line
      • buy IP stock at $37 with a trading target of $43
      • Close 38.55
  • 20160309 The S&P 500 stalled at resistance, failing to attack its 200-day moving average
    • Q1 earnings had better pick up or a rejuvenated bear will be chasing a tired bull again.
    • Trade: WFT (long) Speculators Should Pounce on WFT Stock. Low-priced Weatherford International Plc could rally more than 25%
      • Speculators should look to buy WFT stock at $5.50 for a trade to $7.
      • Close 5.84
  • 20160308 How to Play Energy Stocks. Watching short interest could help determine the best short and long trades
    • Trade: RIG (short) Traders have another shot to short Transocean LTD
      • Sell RIG stock short at $12.50 with a downside target of $10 for a possible gain of 20%. A stop-loss order should be entered at $14.
      • Close 12.71
  • 20160307 Stocks continue to rise, but safe havens such as gold and bonds remain buyer favorites
    • I am of the opinion that the recent buying is a result of bargain hunting in energy stocks, banks, etc., which are geared toward the advancing price of crude oil.
    • Trade: SLB (short) SLB Stock Triggers Reliable Sell Signal. Schlumberger Limited also faces significant resistance and declining momentum
      • Sell SLB stock short at $75 with a trading target of $65 for a potential gain of 13%. A stop-loss order should be entered at $78.
      • Close 74.83
  • 20160304 Despite the run-up, volume and internal indicators are telling us to be cautious
    • Trade: LUV (long) Southwest Airlines Co boasts rock-solid fundamentals and is nearing a good technical entry point
      • Buy LUV stock at $40 with a trading target of $49
      • Close 42.03
  • 20160302 Don’t Follow the Herd Into the Market. Stocks are moving higher with little to back them other than investors’ fear of missing out
    • I see stocks moving into major resistance zones with little to back the move other than fear that a move higher will be missed.
    • Trade: CNX (long) A neckline break in CONSOL Energy Inc. is supported by high accumulation and a new buy signal
      • Buy CNX stock at the market price for a trade to its descending 200-day moving average at about $13.
      • Close 9.05
  • 20160301 Evidence of a Bear Market Mounting. One trusty indicator is telling us that, despite recent strength, a downtrend has begun
    • Looking at 20 past S&P 500 17-month moving average charts, no chart has recovered to a new high after a 5%-plus decline below the moving average. Therefore, I will continue under the assumption that a downtrend has begun.
    • Trade: CSX (short) CSX on a Downhill Slope. CSX has been unable to break its bearish resistance line
      • Sell CSX stock short at $24 with a downside target of $20
      • Close 24.14
