Bits and Pieces – 20180415, Sunday

Trump got to fire his missiles and save face: Trump Orders Military Strikes On Syria: 3 Waves Of Airstrikes Launched. The generals got to brag: “We Successfully Hit Every Target”: Highlights From Pentagon Press Briefing On Syria Airstrikes, minor possible technicalities aside: Syria Claims It Intercepted 71 Out Of 103 Cruise Missiles; Pentagon Denies.

Apparently the three targets were largely abandoned anyway so no Russians or Iranians were killed although the Israelis decided to take out a few Iranians on their own: 20 Dead After Israeli Warplanes Reportedly Attack Iranian Military Base In Syria. Inquiring minds might wonder if bombing a chemical weapon storage facility is wise unless no weapons are present.

As for the Donald, he’s a showman and a true politician judging by the number of times he reverses himself: “These ‘Freedom Fighters’ Fly Planes Into Our Buildings” – A List Of All The Times Trump Warned Against Attacking Syria.

Sanctions and Blockades

The latest entry in the Skripal saga sees the British position further discredited: Independent Swiss Lab Says ‘BZ Toxin’ Used In Skripal Poisoning; US/UK-Produced, Not Russian. Remember that the poisoning occured 13 km from Porton Down, the British chemical weapon research facility. Inquiring minds – there are none in the MSM – might ask why the other side, unlike us, can’t have chemical weapon research facilities? Oh, I forgot. We’re the good guys – aren’t we?

Meanwhile, Trump is leveraging the alleged Syrian chemical weapon attack to impose more sanctions on Russia: Trump Hits Russia With New Sanctions Over Syria Gas Attack.

Cold War II

World War III

We are beginning to get information of the nature of the alleged chemical attack in Douma in the Ghouta district of Damascus: Eyewitness Testimonies During Syria “Chemical Attack'” Explain How Video Was Staged. Thinking people who were wondering why Assad would use chemical weapons when a conventional victory was close at hand might be further mystified by the fact he achieved the victory without the chemical attack: Syrian Army Declares Victory Over Rebels In Eastern Ghouta, Just Hours After Airstrikes. Such an attack has no military value on the battlefield.

The OPCW, the official body overseeing the chemical weapons convention is set to investigate: Syria: What Just Happened, even though the US and its allies on the UN security council tried to block the investigation: The Most Important U.N. Security Council Vote Ever?. Hopefully it won’t be long before we find out what the US is afraid of. We should at least find out the ‘what’ if not the ‘who’.

The motive for the US attack on Syria and its reversal on withdrawing its troops apparently rests on … take a guess … energy:

That two competing pipeline proposals to bring gas to Europe across Syria, one favoured by the AE and one by Russia/Iran seemed to be sufficient motive. After all, “American interests” are always cited as part of any invasion, even though, notably, such interests are never explicitly delineated.

In the last 24 hours, a larger energy-based motive has emerged, the discovery by an Israeli permitted company, Genie Oil and Gas, of a major oilfield in the Golan Heights which is part of Syria: Trump Lays the Seeds to World War III.

The following video collects many of the comments I have made on the Syrian situation while providing good background material:

Finally, here’s Martin Armstrong on the Syrian attack: Trump Lays the Seeds to World War III.
