I have followed the Ukraine conflict from its inception. There was a lull when I clearly understood the background, and progress on the battlefield had the characteristics of a Sunday stroll. Then I started to notice a steady escalation of the conflict by the US and NATO, especially when in 2023 it became clear that Ukraine would lose the war.

Escalation was on an alarming trajectory that appeared to lead to a hot war with the US and NATO. In the meantime, Israel had begun a systematic genocidal war of elimination of the Palestinian people. It seemed clear that other countries in the region had no appetite for a direct war with Israel, even with a steady provocation of attacks on their soil by Israel. Israel regularly violated the territory of not only its usual victims, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, but now Iran.

I have been following this conflict through my sources (I’m now publishing a series of articles to introduce them to you). Very recently, one source said that he saw the Mid East and not Ukraine as the source of an imminent regional war. Consequently, I’ve decided to start actively covering the conflict.

An Israeli strategy from early on has been to try and goad another country, mainly Iran, to attack it to draw the US in to support Israel. Without US help it is unlikely that Israel can achieve its goal of domination of the Levant.

When Israel attached and killer key Iranian officials in their consulate in Damascus in April (Israel strikes Iran consulate in Syria’s capital Damascus: What we know), Iran staged an attack on Israel in return designed not to kill Israelis (and it didn’t) while demonstrating that they can retaliate if they want to. Scott Ritter describes the Iranian response (32:47 minutes).

Scott Ritter: The Missiles of April.

In the last week, Israel killed the top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut (Israel claims it killed senior Hezbollah commander in strike on Beirut). They followed this up by killing Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iran (Hamas says its leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran by an Israeli airstrike).

Yesterday the following news items appeared:

Today, as I write, I note that Iran has not responded yet to Haniyeh ‘s murder, but Israel has further attacked Iran: Israel carries out limited strikes on Iran, with the extent of damage unclear. Apparently this is in retaliation for the limited strike Iran made a month ago in response to Israel’s attack in Damascus.

The earlier attack on Israel was viewed by Iran as “We are even”. Israel chose to not leave it alone but make another attack to even it up from their point of view. Doing the math, Iran now owes Isreal two attacks. This could heat up fast.
