In Hebrews 7, Jesus is identified as a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedecc. The chapter goes into the meaning of this. It was a point that stuck with me from the time I first read it. The importance to the Christian is that as well as being our Lord and saviour, Christ is a high priest above all earthly priests. I recently encountered the following video which gives a powerful presentation of the idea that Melchizedek is a type of Christ (8:03 minutes).

Another interesting relationship between the two figures. Melchizedek as the warrior-king symbolizes the old testament and the struggles of the nation Israel through its battles, both defensive and offensive. Jesus as the sacrificial lamb symbolizes the new testament and the the message of love thine enemies.
