I have spent many hours in self-reflection examining my mind, trying to determine where thoughts might originate and what the mind is in relationship to the body and soul. This is no easy task. I found the following video (19:31 minutes) very helpful. Control of the mind is essential for meditation.

Cayce gives sources of your thoughts as including:

  • Your higher self or divine nature;
  • your current personality or ego,
  • past life memories;
  • thought forms and emotions from others; and
  • discarnate entities, what the Gnostics call the Archons, dark influences from the spiritual world.

He describes consciousness as a three-layer construct: super consciousness or Christ consciousness, sub- consciousness, a storehouse of present and past incarnation memories, and your everyday conscious mind.

As the video describes, it is important for one’s spiritual growth to separate that which nourishes the soul from that which destroys it. It is essential to learn to separate the “signal from the noise”. The noise is your everyday mental activity spawned by a noisy world. The signal is an intuition, a creative idea, a sudden understanding of something, the solution to a problem, the affirmation that something contemplated is right or wrong, the immense peace that emerges from a quiet mind.

Test each thought. If it is only of a positive nature it is likely from your higher self. If it is repetitive of the past with any negative elements it is from a lower source. It is important to be brutally honest with yourself about yourself. The careful examination of your thoughts in terms of what they underlie will help. You can and must be honest in realizing how spiritually lowly you might find yourself since no one is watching. But DO NOT JUDGE yourself. Simply observe. Bringing the dark aspects of your soul into the light begins to change them. Your higher self will do the work. The video finishes with much helpful direction

Here is another video (16;25 minutes) that explains the diversity of sources of our thoughts.

In this video, the nature of thoughts as vibrations and broadcasts are explained. Thoughts can coalesce into “thoughtforms” that have persistence in space and time. In the video, the “negative entities” that Cayce refers to may be considered to be the Archons of Gnostic Cosmology.

Application

The challenge posed but unanswered by the second video has probably left you reeling. “So where do I start?” you may ask. I want to give you a simple exercise that will start you on the path of gaining control of your mind.

The exercise is this:

  1. Find 5 minutes in your day and a quiet place with no activity or distraction. Bedtime at night may be all that some can find.
  2. Sit comfortably. This means comfortable clothes, a drink of water before starting, feeding the cat or dog, turning off your cell phone, and preempting anything that might impinge on your 5 minutes. Educating the family, politely over time, that this is your quiet time may have to be done. Five minutes is not too much to ask.
  3. Do not let distractions upset you. There will always be some. But we can learn as we go what can be forestalled in the future. The idea is to take preventative action of any bodily function or surrounding activity that might intrude on your awareness. If something does intrude, let it go. Confronting it will definitely destroy the experience. You are slowly building a quiet personal sanctuary.
  4. Next is to observe your mind, your thoughts. If you are normal, you’ll find that the wild west exists in your head. Grab the first thought that comes by and mentally say “I’ll deal with you later”. Then grab the next one and do the same. You ate beginning to impose discipline on what is like a child that has never had any.
  5. Some thoughts of an urgent nature may require immediate action. “Did I leave the stove on?” or”The bathtub is overflowing!” require a justifiable response. Most, however, can be left for later. They will come to you again outside your quiet time. If you become afraid that you will not remember them have a notebook with you and make a short entry. If this is necessary, make sure you act on it the next day so that it doesn’t interrupt your next quiet time.
  6. Some thoughts carry an emotional package. You are unlikely to achieve a quiet mind without at least beginning the healing process that they require. This can be exceptionally difficult but try small, regular efforts at resolving them overtime. Having a true intention and action to move in a right direction may be enough to allow your mind to quiet.
  7. When you are able to achieve some control over your thoughts, consider what Cayce said about the source of thoughts. It may help you deal with some thoughts, especially “bad” thoughts.
